Township Gardening Competition
Eradicating poverty and hunger through sustainable vegetable gardens
We are very excited to be starting our first gardening competition in Riebeeck East where members of Kwa Nomzamo Location will be entering their gardens under 3 different categories namely:Entrants can choose either one category or a combination of whatever interests them most.
The idea is to create beautiful spaces and encourage people to have gardens where they can pick their own food and always have a supply of fresh fruit and vegetables and any excess can be swopped or sold to neighbours to help the people in the village become more self sufficient.
We have had an incredibly positive response to date with over 30 entrants and still more joining. It is truly amazing to see everyone so busy clearing and getting gardens ready for planting.
The gardens will be open to the public for viewing on the 29th of October where judges from Grahamstown will come in to view and judge. A donation box will be at each garden entrance to encourage visitors to donate a small gratuity for the gardeners who will be encouraged to use this to buy more seeds.
We are wanting to ensure that people stay motivated and would like to be able to ensure that everyone who paticipates will receive some small consolation prize and we appeal therefore for more donations of anything garden related: spades, hospepipes, small gardening tools, plants, seedlings, seeds, fruit trees, cuttings, gum boots, gloves, saws etc...
Various other gardens in the village will also be open and Mooi Meisies Guest House will be open for tea, cakes and light lunches and our local shop will also be open. Take away food will also be available from foodstalls.
All donations for the project will be much appreciated and all progress will be recorded on our website www.riebeeckeast.co.za and anyone wanting to find out more about what we are doing are welcome to contact me by email at cary@imaginet.co.za.
All input and ideas also welcome.
Keep well and thanks so much.
Kind Regards
Cary, Neil and the Riebeeck East Community
